Solve Center Dot Sudoku: Rules and Strategies

Center Dot Sudoku is a Sudoku variant. The central cells of the nine standard 3×3 blocks are marked and form an additional area.

These nine centrally distributed cells across the grid also contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.

The goal is a completely filled, conflict-free puzzle. Each move must follow the visible clues and already confirmed entries.

Rules

  • Each active cell contains exactly one number from 1 to 9.
  • Each row contains the numbers 1 through 9 without repetition.
  • Each column contains the numbers 1 through 9 without repetition.
  • Each standard 3×3 block contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.
  • These nine centrally distributed cells across the grid also contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.
  • Given numbers are not changed.
  • Each final entry must meet all rules simultaneously.

Orientation in the Grid

Rows are counted from top to bottom, columns from left to right. For a number pair, the first number indicates the row and the second the column; (4,7) thus refers to the cell in row 4, column 7.

The examples each show a specific intermediate state. Blue markings indicate the utilized prerequisites, red markings exclude options, and green markings confirm a result.

Basic Solving Idea

Start with standard Sudoku units, but also always check the marked additional areas. A candidate remains allowed only if it fits in all associated units.

After each confirmed entry, it pays to do a quick comprehensive review of the affected units and hints. This creates a chain of small, understandable steps.

1. Complete an Almost-Full Row

In the row unit 1, everything is filled except cell (1,1). Visible are 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9; only 3 is missing from the permissible numbers.

Therefore, 3 goes into (1,1). This move requires no guesswork: the other values of the visible unit are fully visible in the image.

2. Complete an Almost-Full Column

In the column unit 1, everything is filled except cell (1,1). Visible are 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9; only 3 is missing.

3. Read the Relevant Area Completely

In the 3×3 block 1 unit, everything is filled except cell (1,1). Visible are 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9; only 3 is missing.

4. Use the Extra Area as a Complete Unit

In the Center Dot area, everything is filled except cell (2,5). Visible are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9; only 6 is missing.

Therefore, 6 goes into (2,5). No guessing needed: the other values of the unit are fully visible in the image.

5. Exclude a Repetition in the Extra Area

The number 5 is already present at (2,2) in the extra unit. Therefore, the same value cannot occur again at (2,5), which is also marked.

Therefore, 5 is eliminated from (2,5). The diagram shows only this exclusion for clarity; the final value of the cell is also determined by its standard Sudoku units.

6. Localize a Number in the Extra Area

There are several open cells in the Center Dot extra unit. For the number 6, the other open positions are eliminated based on their respective rows, columns, or 3×3 blocks; leaving only (2,5).

7. Combine Multiple Units in One Cell

For (1,1), several units are still incomplete. After the combined exclusions from all related rows, columns, and regions, only 3 remains.

Typical Solving Process

  1. Immediately fill obviously complete rows, columns, and relevant regions.
  2. Note only candidates that are allowed by all normal units for open cells.
  3. Then apply the puzzle type’s additional rules to these candidates.
  4. Enter only unambiguously justified values.
  5. After each entry, recheck all touched units and hints.
  6. Repeat the review until the grid is complete.

Common Mistakes

  • Overlooking the marked additional area: An allowed candidate might already appear there.
  • Comparing only adjacent marked cells: The entire extra area is a shared unit.
  • Guess too early: Multiple remaining candidates are not yet a reason for guessing.
  • Not rechecking after an entry: A single value can simultaneously affect several units and hints.

Tips for Beginners

  • Start with units or hints that show especially many visible clues.
  • Write down small sets of candidates instead of confusing possibilities in your head.
  • Always verify a candidate against every rule touching its cell.
  • Treat confirmed exclusions as real progress, even if no value is set yet.
  • If no move is visible, deliberately switch between rows, columns, regions, and hints.

Center Dot Sudoku becomes clear as soon as normal units and additional hints are consistently reevaluated after each confirmed step. Small, fully justified deductions are more reliably leading to the goal than early guessing.
